SB 711 Caps MVR Price
SB 711, which deals with property tax, was approved on the last day of the legislative session by both the House and the Senate with an amendment that caps the price of bulk purchases of the Mo. driver and motor vehicle records at 0.5 cents per record. Representatives in the House added the amendment earlier this week in response to an outcry from companies who purchase the records in bulk. The DOR raised the price of the records from $1.25 to $7 per record with no bulk purchase refund on May 1.
Legal Attacks on MVR Price
Judge Richard Callahan denied without prejudice a petition for a temporary restraining order on the DOR's increase of the Mo. driver and motor vehicle records. A hearing was scheduled for May 29 for the presentation of more evidence and a decision regarding a temporary injunction against the department.
DIFP Director to Leave Department
Gov. Matt Blunt nominated Doug Ommen, the director of the DIFP, to the Missouri Administrative Hearing Commission on April 21. Director Ommen accepted the nomination. "I am deeply grateful to Gov. Blunt for giving me the opportunity to serve Missouri consumers through my work as department director, but I look forward to this new challenge as I continue my service to the citizens of this state," Director Ommen said.
Legendary Leadership Conference Coming
Four members of the Mo. Sports Hall of Fame--Charlie Spoonhour, Len Dawson, Norm Stewart and Whitey Herzog--will present the keynote address at the annual MAIA Leadership Conference in July. The group has been designated the "Missouri Legends." Registration for the event is still open, and early bird discounts apply. The conference will be held July 16-18 at the Lodge of Four Seasons at the Lake of the Ozarks.
Nominations Needed for Annual Awards
The annual MAIA awards ceremonies are approaching quickly, and nomination forms are posted online. The Young Agent of the Year award is given at the Young Agents' Conference in June. The deadline to submit a nomination is May 15. The other three awards, Insurance Person of the Year, Company Rep. of the Year and Top Partner, are given at the Leadership Conference in July. The deadline to submit a nomination for these awards is June 1.
Fundraising Efforts Continue for New Building
Pledges are continuing to come in for donations to support the new MAIA headquarters in Jefferson City. The new building will support the growing staff and make it possible for the association to expand educational opportunities. Groundbreaking is projected for early fall. Pledge on-line or print a pledge card.
